When we talk about ‘problem skin’ we refer to many different types of skin disorders, for instance:
- Eczema is a medical condition that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated.
- Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that produces thick red plaques covered with silvery scales.
- Acne is largely an adolescence problem, but many adults also suffer its consequences.
- Rosacea is a common disorder that mainly affects skin on the face. It causes redness on the nose, chin, cheeks, and forehead.
In this article however, we are going to focus on Acne. All of us who has suffered with acne, can relate to the frustration of getting pimples, and we all have our story to tell and “remedies” to share.
Because of Acne teenagers as well as adults suffer mostly with confidence issues and embarrassment, which some must live with till deep into their mature years.
Our purpose with this article is not to give an in dept oversight on acne, because anyone can get this information all over the internet, or from a qualified dermatologist or doctor, but rather to lift out the importance of natural, organic skin care and skin regiments for those who don’t want to contaminate their skin with commercialized products.
One should always keep in mind that when you switch from commercial facial products to natural ones, the skin needs time to adopt. Natural acne skin care products don’t only have a topical ability to restore and heal, but also has the ability to penetrate through all the layers of the skin in order to restore the skin on cellular level, and this takes time.
More people are becoming aware of the fact that over the counter acne products and prescription treatments contain commercialized and toxic ingredients that is causing harm to their skin. These products usually dry and peel the skin and therefore strip it from the very valuable natural oils and abilities that are produced for self-healing. A “quick fix” perhaps, but in the long term a damaging one. Unfortunately a majority of people out there still do not understand that stripping the skin of the natural healing oils causes more damage than good. Natural skin care products tend to assist the skin in the healing process instead of stripping it all away, and although a slightly more lengthy process, is defiantly a route worth taking if you want long term healing results.
Also, we should never under estimate a proper healthy diet. I remember when I was plagued as a teenager with acne and even deep into my mature years, I resisted all talk about changing my diet. I was rather looking for a quick fix and used all types of harsh acne products to get rid of the problem as quick as possible. Today as an herbalist, I realise, I just prolonged my suffering, and my skin would have been much younger looking if I did not used all those harsh chemical products and if I changed my diet to a more vegetarian / vegan friendly one.
Some studies show that cutting back on things like dairy can improve acne related issues. This is because “Milk naturally contains a great number of hormones, many of which are androgens – there is no such thing as hormone-free milk” a quote from William Danby, assistant professor of dermatology at the Giesel School of Medicine at Dartmouth who has published many studies on diet and skin care.
The hormone infused milk have an impact on our skin whether we want to believe it or not, and in today’s world where our animals are injected with growth hormones and milk producing hormones, the effects on our bodies are just plain negative. Acne breakouts are mostly caused by hormones. Your hormones change, for instance during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. And by adding more “unwanted” hormones like the lab infused ones that comes in dairy products, just aggravates the problem.
There are many herbs, plants essential oils and flower remedies that have proved to be excellent in restoring hormonal imbalance. These same natural remedies can be used topically as well as internally to prevent acne breakouts, to clear the skin and to heal existing acne.
As mentioned before, when using natural skin care products, the skin doesn’t dry out, causes irritation or allergies, but rather receive the necessary support from Nature that it needs. Keep in mind though, that some allergic reactions can occur, like for instance nut allergies, when you are allergic to nuts or nut related plants. So for those that might be allergic to certain herbs, plants or flowers or certain essential oils, it’s still always best to ensure you check the labels and consult your doctor before use. This rule is also a definite when you are pregnant.
